Rose Gum is one of three two-storey cabins on the property. The bedroom sits upstairs with a king bed; the bathroom and living are below. A sofa bed in the lounge sleeps up to two more. The possums usually come down to the lawn around dusk. ## Beyond the cabin Kondalilla National Park starts on the property boundary; the trailhead to the falls is a short walk. Seven are single-storey couples cabins (king bed, sleeps two; one studio with queen). Three are two-storey cabins with a king bedroom upstairs and a sofa bed in the lounge – they sleep up to four. ### How far apart are the cabins? Fifty to one hundred metres between each cabin. No shared walls, no shared verandahs, no neighbours within earshot. The two-storey cabins are grouped at one end of the property; the couples cabins set deeper into the gardens and rainforest. ### What is included in every cabin? King-size spa bath, wood-burning fireplace (firewood supplied April to September), private balcony or patio with hooded BBQ, self-contained kitchen with stovetop, microwave, fridge and toaster (no oven), reverse-cycle air conditioning, ceiling fan, hardwood floors, flat-screen TV with DVD player, board games, books, bathrobes, free toiletries, hairdryer, linens and towels. ### What about breakfast? A continental breakfast hamper is stocked in the cabin for the length of your stay – cereals, yogurt, juice, milk, bread, butter, jams, seasonal fruit. Each morning, Michael delivers fresh croissants to the door. A bacon, egg, sausage and mushroom add-on is available for $25 for two. ### Can we order dinner to the cabin? Yes. BBQ dinner hampers and hot dinner hampers are $95 and can be pre-ordered when you book. Day-of orders are taken until 4 p.m.; 24 hours’ notice is appreciated for the BBQ options. Full menu on the Menu page. ### Is there Wi-Fi in the cabin? No. The site geography limits coverage and we have leaned into it – this is an unplug-and-listen-to-the-rain place. Limited Wi-Fi access is available on request for genuine need. ### Are the cabins air-conditioned? Yes. Reverse-cycle air conditioning with a ceiling fan in every cabin. The wood fireplace handles the cooler months from April through September. ### What are the check-in and check-out times? Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. (office hours 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.). Check-out is 11 a.m. If you are arriving after office hours, please contact us in advance for after-hours instructions. ### Are children welcome? The two-storey cabins (Rose Gum, Iron Bark, Hoop Pine) accommodate up to two children alongside two adults. The single-storey couples cabins are sized for two; we do not recommend them for families with children. A high chair and baby safety gates are available on request. Ages 0–2 stay free; ages 3 and up are charged per night. ### Are pets allowed? No pets, with the exception of registered guide dogs. The property backs onto national park and rainforest, and our wildlife policy reflects that. ### Can we smoke? Smoking is not permitted inside the cabins. It is permitted on your private balcony with the doors and windows closed. A $500 cleaning fee applies to violations. ### Can we feed the wildlife? No. Feeding any wildlife is prohibited under Parks and Gardens legislation. Kookaburras will visit your meals anyway – please enjoy them, but do not feed. ### Can we swim in the lake? No. The lake is twenty-eight metres deep, spring-fed and extremely cold. It is for the view, not for swimming. ### Is there parking? Free on-site parking for one vehicle per cabin, directly beside your patio. ### How does housekeeping work? Daily housekeeping is included for stays longer than four nights. Shorter stays are serviced on arrival and departure; the hamper is restocked as you use it. ### What is the damage deposit? A refundable AUD $200 damage deposit is taken on arrival by credit card. Was surprised to find a platter in the fridge for our breakfast and a tray of other items to accommodate for other breakfast items on the bench. Our fire bin was refilled every day, the fire was lovely and our cabin was very cosy. The bed was a comfortable sleep and the spa was pretty cool. We loved feeding the kookaburras who made a beeline for our verandah each day. Even the bush turkeys found us\! Will come back for sure. It rained for 3 days that we were there, but nothing stopped us going out and about to explore. If anything, the rain on the tin roof and a roaring fire kept us very happy. Montville and Maleny are just a short drive away with lovely antique stores, delis and many eating options. Woolworths is located in Maleny as well. Flame Hill Vineyard is located very close to the entrance of the cabins and is well worth a lunch or dinner visit. We had lunch at Cappriccios Italian Restaurant and loved it so much we went back again the next day\! The food was simply divine and priced very reasonably. Flame Hill Vineyard did wine tastings for $15. You could taste 5 of their wines for that price. We picked different ones and shared the tasting, so we actually tried 10 altogether. Staff were very accommodating even though they were clearing up from the lunch time rush, but we did not feel rushed at all and left with a lovely bottle of Shiraz and a bottle of Wild Child... so good. > > – Danielle > It was very refreshing to be immersed in this wonderful location for a few days. It feels like a treehouse when you're inside, with all the trees and greenery surrounding the cabin. The hospitality from Michael (the owner) is second to none. He gave us a great overview of the place on arrival and was so helpful whenever we had a question. We ordered the BBQ hamper for our first night and loved it so much we ordered another for our second night\! It was all delicious local produce. Also, the complimentary croissants delivered each morning were a real treat\! We must mention the kookaburras, our favourite part. They visited the balcony each time we were out there. They are cheeky, you might want to be careful with your food as they aren't afraid to try and snatch it from you. Perfect for couples or even solos wanting to escape the busy world and slow down. There is a variety of cabins to choose from, some are located at the top of the property and others towards the bottom. There is a large lake that sits between the two sections. We were in Seclusion which is at the bottom of the property, but it seems that you would have a good view of the lake or the mountain itself if you rented a cottage that is higher up. The cabin has everything you need for a relaxing and/or romantic getaway. Each cottage is nestled in trees and there is a good distance between them to maintain privacy. There is a wonderful spa bath with a large window so you can relax in the spa with a lovely view of the bushland and the multitude of birds that are in the area. The king-sized bed was comfortable and the pillows large and fluffy. The kitchen is well equipped. Cheeses and other delights were in the fridge for us on arrival and there was free port to enjoy with the platter. There was also a generous continental breakfast for each morning of our stay, and fresh croissants were delivered at 8 o'clock each morning. There was a BBQ on our verandah. You could order supplies to cook a hot breakfast and order dinner if you wished. Three bottles of wine were in the cabin for purchase. The drive to the township of Montville is only about 5–10 minutes. We chose the Harmony cabin which is the last cabin at the bottom of the valley, seclusion is an understatement. As soon as we opened the door, instant feeling of comfort, content, satisfied. Upon arrival, all ingredients for a cooked and continental breakfast were provided, enough to cover the full five days\! We were also offered a complimentary BBQ hamper for dinner by booking directly, this also was enough to feed two people for two meals each. The hosts were amazing, allowing us to have our privacy, but also checking in to see if we needed any top-ups of anything. They also offered to pick us up after our hike\! We love the outdoors, so walked to Lake Baroon and then up to Kondalilla Falls, full circuit is 23km but can be cut short. The fireplace and spa were used at the end of our days, listening to the sounds of the bush. We had a BBQ pack and it was very generous, which included delicious homemade coleslaw and potato bake. I would definitely recommend the BBQ pack. So nice not to have to think about dinner. It was a sheer delight and complete relaxation. The breakfast tray was a wonderful selection of continental choices. Heaps of choices. The bed was very large (I think a king) but very, very comfortable with a selection of pillows. The spa, well that was me, all day, I lived in it to waste months away. An enclosed fireplace was a delight in the evenings, with the reverse cycle air con keeping the temperature perfect. A TV and large selection of videos at reception. Microwave and plenty of cooking facilities. Walk the grounds, say hello to the kookaburras, duck, and wildlife. You have to try out the $2 rain machine. While you're here pop over the road to Flame Hill wines, and call in at the Maleny Food Co fromagerie. Cheese and wine and biscuits. The villages on the range are quieter too: less weekend traffic on the road up, easier parking on Main Street, shorter queues at the cheese factory. The trade-off is that some smaller venues run reduced hours midweek, so check individual venues if you've got a specific stop in mind. ## Who it suits Three nights is the length that lets you settle. Two nights is one walk and a sleep; three is a walk, a slow morning, a drive into Maleny or Mapleton, and the third day doing nothing in particular. Repeat visitors who already know the place use the deal to extend stays they were going to make anyway. This is a day trip into the Mary Valley and the Noosa hinterland villages, with the return on the Bruce Highway south. About 22 km from the cabins to Kenilworth (40 minutes), with another 30 minutes or so to the Noosa hinterland from there. Allow a full day for the worthwhile parts. ## To Kenilworth The drive from Montville to Kenilworth runs via Obi Obi Road and Maleny-Kenilworth Road, dropping down the western side of the Blackall Range into the Mary Valley. Rolling dairy country, two lanes, the kind of road that takes its time. **Kenilworth Dairies** at 45 Charles Street is the cheese factory most people come for. Open daily from 7:30 am to 3 pm (to 4 pm in public and school holidays). There's a window into the production area, tasting plates in the shop, and Poppa's Cafe on-site for coffee and lunch. The cheddars, fettas and yoghurt win awards regularly. **Kenilworth Country Bakery** is the other reason. Home of the **1 kg donut challenge**: a Long John donut filled with cream and your choice of custard, Nutella or jam. Finish it and the bakery refunds your money and adds your name to the wall of fame. They also bill themselves as the makers of Australia's first coffee donut, which is exactly what it sounds like. ## Conondale National Park **Important: most of Conondale is 4WD-access only.** The Booloumba Creek Road into the park has three creek crossings; a standard sedan will not make it through, especially after rain. If you've come up in a hire car or a low car, plan a different day-trip and come back to Conondale another time. For those with the right vehicle, the walks from the Booloumba Creek day-use area: - **Booloumba Falls**: 3 km return, moderate (Grade 3). - **Strangler Cairn**: 6.5 km return, 2.5 hours, moderate. - **Artists Cascades**: 10.6 km return, 4 hours, harder. - **Mount Allan Fire Tower**: 11 km return, 3.5 hours; 360-degree views from the top. The road through Cooroy continues to Noosa Botanic Gardens and Lake MacDonald, both signposted. **Pomona** is the village beneath Mt Cooroora. The **Majestic Theatre**, built in 1921, claims to be the only cinema in the world still continuously screening silent films, with live organ accompaniment on its 1937 Compton Organ. Check the theatre's site for current screenings before going. **Cooran** is a small village with bushwalking and a few swimming holes nearby: worth a slow drive-through, not a destination stop. ## Heading back Two return options. The **Eumundi route** drops you onto the Bruce Highway near Eumundi. If it's a Wednesday or Saturday, the Eumundi Markets are on Memorial Drive (Wednesday and Saturday, 7:30 am to 2 pm). Hundreds of stalls; allow at least an hour. The **direct route back** retraces the Mary Valley road from Kenilworth, climbing back up the range to Maleny then to Montville. Fuel up at Maleny on the way out; the next reliable fuel stop is Kenilworth itself. This is a longer drive than the Maleny-Mapleton loop, with more time in the car. Kondalilla National Park backs onto the cabins, and the wider hinterland holds another half-dozen named tracks within a 30-minute drive. The shortlist below covers the named tracks, with grades and times so you can match the walk to the day. ## In Kondalilla National Park Two main trails leave from the Kondalilla Falls day-use area, 9 km from the cabins by road. Both start at the same carpark; pick by how far you want to walk. **Picnic Creek Circuit**: 1.7 km return, 45 minutes to an hour, Grade 2. The easy option. Loops through subtropical rainforest along the creek. No stairs, suitable for most fitness levels. **Kondalilla Falls Circuit**: 4.7 km return, 2 to 3 hours, Grade 3. The full descent past the upper rock pools to the base of the falls. **Over 300 stairs** in each direction. The lookout from the falls, and the pools above them, are the pay-off. Two further tracks leave from the Narrows Road carpark on the park's northern edge: **Narrows Lookout**: 2.2 km return, an hour. Hinterland views from the ridge. **Baroon Lookout**: 4.4 km return, two hours. Continues toward Lake Baroon and back. Better in cool weather. Dogs are not permitted in Queensland national parks. The Glider Gallery and Butterfly Walk are sealed boardwalks suited to strollers and wheelchairs; the other tracks are unsealed but easy. The Discovery Centre at the entrance opens 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, closed on major public holidays; check current hours before relying on it. Coin donation supports the maintenance. A café, picnic and BBQ areas and a small playground sit at the entrance. The reserve is a good half-morning, especially after rain when the rainforest is loudest. No dogs. ## Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World Different proposition: terraced gardens looking out toward the Glass House Mountains, plus walk-through aviaries housing more than 600 birds. **Gardens-only $27 adult, $22 senior, $17 child. Gardens plus Aviary $47, $42, $32.** Open daily 9 am to 4:30 pm, closed Christmas. Aviary guided tours run at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm, each about fifty minutes. Five separate environments, walk-through, no glass between you and the birds. Worth the higher ticket if you're travelling with kids. ## Lake Baroon Three point two kilometres from the cabins. Two recreation areas, north and south, with free BBQs, picnic tables and shelters. **Non-motorised boating only**: canoes, kayaks, sailing dinghies, paddle craft. Boat ramps open 6 am to 6 pm. Fishing is permitted with a Stocked Impoundment Permit. Swimming and paddling along the shoreline are free; there's no enclosed swimming area, so watch the depth and the wind. The hinterland sits well above the coast and temperatures run a few degrees cooler: pleasant for walking in summer, occasionally cold enough for a jumper in winter. After heavy rain, the falls and creek crossings run higher and the rock pools can become unsafe. Check the Queensland Parks alerts page before heading out on the Kondalilla Falls Circuit. What to find on Montville's main street, five minutes from the cabins. - Tag: Village --- Five minutes' drive from the cabins, Montville sits at the top of the Blackall Range with the village's main street running along the ridge. Galleries, cafés, a chocolatier, the well-known clock shop, and the village hall all sit within easy walking distance of each other on Main Street. The buildings are a mix of restored Queenslanders, weatherboard shops and a couple of theme builds (the German chalet, mainly). Tree-lined, walkable, half a day if you stop everywhere. The pace is slow. Most shops open mid-morning and close by late afternoon. Weekend mornings are the busiest stretch on the main strip; weekday mornings are nearly empty. ## Galleries **Montville Art Gallery**, 138 Main Street. Set in an 1890s Queenslander; the building is half the visit. **Mayfield Galleries**, Shop 11, 127 Main Street. Range of contemporary local work. **Montville Woods Gallery**. Handcrafted wooden homewares; trading since 1995. **Illume Creations**. Glass sculpture studio and gallery. ## Eat and drink **Poets Cafe**. Long-running main-street place with a panoramic view. Trading since 1995. **Little May Espresso**. Coffee and a small menu of local and organic food. **Fiorio & Co**. French cooking. Shop 3/182 Main Street. **Priscillas Gallery, Cafe & Giftware**. Gallery, café and giftware; open for breakfast and lunch (check current hours). **Montville Cafe Bar & Grill** rounds out the main-street eating options. The chalet itself is unmissable from the street. Run by the Montville Village Association, with proceeds supporting the village. Stalls are local. Smaller and slower than the Eumundi Markets, more like a village fundraiser than a tourist destination. A half-hour walk through, not a half-day expedition. ## The Visitor Information Centre On Main Street itself, signposted. Useful stop on arrival for printed maps and current event flyers, and the staff know the village in detail. ## Parking The Visitor Information Centre has the village's main public car park, with coach parking beside it. Otherwise, on-street kerb parking lines the strip, busiest on weekends and during the monthly market. The walk from the VIC car park to the far end takes about ten minutes. ## Best time to go Mornings on weekdays are quietest, with the cafés open early and most galleries by mid-morning. Saturday is busy, particularly the second Saturday when the market is on. Sunday afternoons quieten down by mid-afternoon. Montville to Maleny, Maleny to Mapleton, Mapleton back to Montville. About 90 minutes of pure driving; with cheese factory, dairy, market, falls walk and a vineyard lunch, plan for four to five hours. ## The route **Montville to Maleny**: 15 km, 20 minutes, on the Maleny-Montville Road. The road runs across the top of the range, with farmland one side and bushland the other. **Maleny to Mapleton**: 25 to 30 minutes north of Maleny, dipping through the Obi Obi Valley and climbing back to Mapleton on the next ridge. **Mapleton back to Montville**: 10 km, 10 minutes. The Mapleton-Montville Road runs straight back along the ridge. The order matters because Maleny's main attractions are morning-side (cheese factory, dairy, market) and Mapleton's are walking and a pub lunch, better in early afternoon. ## In Maleny **Maleny Cheese** at 1 Clifford Street. A working cheese factory with a viewing window into the production room. Shop open seven days, 10 am to 3 pm. The cafe runs Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 2:30 pm. Tastings are self-guided in the shop; group tasting tours are bookable in advance. **Maleny Dairies** at 70 McCarthy Road. **Farm tours are paused indefinitely**, so don't plan a visit around them. The MilkBar opens Wednesday to Friday, 9 am to 4 pm, for buying the dairy's products direct. **Maleny Sunday Market**, every Sunday 8 am to 2 pm at the RSL Hall on Bunya Street. Indoor and undercover, so weather-proof. Also on the Maleny side: **Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve**: 55 hectares of rainforest, no entry fee, an hour or two of walking if you've got the time. Same post for fees and tour times. ## Toward Mapleton The drive south of Maleny crosses the Obi Obi Valley. There's no service-station strip in between, so top up fuel at Maleny if you need it. ## In Mapleton **Mapleton Falls National Park** is the destination. The **Wompoo Circuit** is 1.3 km return, 45 minutes, easy. The trail passes **Peregrine Lookout**, which gives the long view across the Obi Obi Valley toward the Conondale Range. The falls themselves drop about 120 metres, best after rain. There's a grassy picnic area at the carpark, toilets, and a wheelchair-accessible path to the main lookout. **Mapleton Public House** at 2 Flaxton Drive is the village pub. Mon–Tue 11 am to 7 pm (bar menu only), Wed–Thu 11 am to 8:30 pm, Fri–Sat to 10 pm, Sun to 6 pm. Standard country-pub menu and a deck. Wine tasting and sales Wednesday to Sunday, 10:30 am to 5 pm; the deck restaurant runs lunch Wednesday to Sunday, 11:30 am to 3 pm. Hours shift seasonally, so check before you go; reservations are sensible for lunch, especially weekends. Allow more time after rain or in fog, particularly on the Obi Obi Valley descent. No fuel between Maleny and Mapleton; top up at Maleny. At Montville Country Cabins, ten standalone timber cabins sit across 16 acres. Each has a private entrance, its own balcony or patio, a king-size spa bath and a wood fireplace. The cabins stand 50 to 100 metres apart. No shared walls. No shared verandahs. The distance keeps the balcony, spa and evening quiet. ## Give the cabin some time Check-in begins at 3 pm. Arrive with enough afternoon left to unpack, open the balcony doors and stop moving for a while. The continental breakfast hamper is already stocked for the stay. A cheese platter, chocolates and port are waiting too. Dinner can stay simple. Every cabin has a kitchen, though no oven, plus a hooded BBQ outside. Phones can wait. ## Montville, Kondalilla or the lake The cabins sit between several easy ways to spend a morning. Choose by weather and energy rather than building a timetable before you arrive. Montville Village is five minutes away for cafés, galleries and a walk along Main Street. There is no dining-room seating time to make. Put the kettle on, take breakfast outside and decide what the day needs after it starts. That is the useful shape of couples accommodation in Montville: privacy first, then a village, walk or drive when you feel like leaving it. If rain closes a track, the cabin still holds the day. If lunch runs long, nothing is waiting back at the property except the spa, the balcony and dinner. Massage and spa treatments are available on request for an additional charge. Ask ahead if it matters to your plans rather than leaving it until arrival. ## Two nights or longer Two nights give you one full day between arrival and the 11 am check-out. A small spring-fed lake sits between the two. Most of what guests do outside their cabin happens on this land. ## The lake Spring-fed, small, with picnic tables on the shore and outdoor furniture scattered between the cabins and the water. The view from the lake-side cabins (Cuddle Pie, Silky Oak, and the three two-storey family cabins Rose Gum, Iron Bark and Hoop Pine) opens onto it; Snuggle Pot catches a distant glimpse through the trees. The lake is the visual centrepiece of the property. The cabins are 50 to 100 metres apart, so the gardens between them are real spaces with picnic tables and outdoor furniture at intervals, not narrow strips between buildings. ## The rainforest edge The property line meets Kondalilla National Park along part of its boundary. Walks into the park leave from the edge of the gardens. The couples cottages with rainforest outlook (Harmony, Peace, Seclusion) sit closest to this edge; their verandahs look directly into the bush. The lake-side cabins face the water and the gardens instead. ## Where to sit outside Outdoor furniture and picnic areas sit at intervals across the property: by the lake, in the gardens, near the rainforest edge. From any cabin, walking to a quiet spot to read or to drink coffee is a matter of minutes. ## The four animals you'll see The property's wildlife is consistent across the seasons: - **Kookaburras** at breakfast. They watch the BBQ rails and the picnic tables; food left unattended will move. - **Birds** in the canopy. Their calls carry across the property, especially in the morning. - **Green tree frogs** after rain. Around the lake edges and the verandah eaves. - **Possums** at night. They visit the cabins after dark; closing the verandah door is a good habit. The cabins stand 50 to 100 metres apart, so no shared walls, no shared verandahs, and most days no other guests in earshot. The property sits high on the Blackall Range, so the mornings are cooler than the coast 30 minutes below, and the afternoons hold mist when the weather turns. ## Ten cabins, three tiers The three two-storey cabins, **Rose Gum**, **Iron Bark** and **Hoop Pine**, are 80 m² each. Bedroom upstairs, bathroom downstairs. A king bed upstairs, a sofa bed in the lounge, and a balcony with lake views. These are the family cabins, sleeping up to four, suited to small groups but still couple-friendly when the sofa bed is stowed. The five couples cottages are single-level, 60 m². **Cuddle Pie** and **Snuggle Pot** look out to the lake and garden. **Harmony**, **Peace** and **Seclusion** sit against the rainforest. Peace has a sofa bed for an extra guest; Seclusion is the most enclosed cabin on the property. All five have king beds, private patios with hooded BBQs, and the spa bath inside with a bushland outlook. **Silky Oak** is the studio cabin: 55 m², queen bed, lake view, ground floor. The family and couples cabins sit apart from each other on the property, so a stay in Harmony feels nothing like a stay in Iron Bark even on the same weekend. ## What's in every cabin A king-size spa bath. A wood-burning fireplace, with firewood supplied April through September. Reverse-cycle air conditioning, ceiling fan, hardwood floors. A fully equipped kitchen: stovetop, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster. No oven; that's deliberate, and the hooded BBQ on the balcony picks up anything that needs the heat. A TV, DVD player, CD player and a shelf of films and board games for slow evenings. Bathrobes, linens, towels, hairdryer, toiletries. Chocolates on arrival. Every morning, Michael walks the property and delivers fresh croissants to your door. This is the detail guests mention most often. BBQ hampers, hot dinner hampers and an in-cabin mini-bar are available as paid extras. Massage and a short menu of beauty treatments can be booked in the cabin. Kondalilla Falls is 9 km away by road. Lake Baroon, 3.2 km from the cabins, takes fishing, sailing and canoeing. On the property itself: a small lake, picnic areas, walking paths through the gardens, and the local soundtrack. Kookaburras at breakfast, birds in the canopy, green tree frogs after rain, possums after dark. The kookaburras turn up at meals, so watch any plate you leave outside. ## What's deliberately not here **No Wi-Fi in the cabins.** The geography doesn't allow it, and Karen and Michael have leaned into that. Limited Wi-Fi access is available on request for genuine need. The point of the place is to put the phone down. **No oven, no pets.** The kitchen runs on stovetop, microwave and BBQ. The property borders national park and rainforest, so the pet rule isn't negotiable. ## Karen and Michael Karen and Michael Cross took over Montville Country Cabins in 2024. They run it themselves, hands-on, and Michael is the one most guests meet first. The croissant delivery is the moment that appears most often in reviews. Repeat visitors are a large part of the guest list, and many have been coming back well before the Crosses took over. ## Who it suits Couples who want quiet. Honeymooners and anniversary travellers. Repeat guests on year-on-year visits. Occasional young families in the two-storey cabins. Not loud groups. Quiet hours run from 10 pm to 8 am.
