“Walking at Kondalilla” can mean a 1.7 km forest circuit or a 4.7 km descent with more than 300 stairs. Those are different mornings. Choose before you reach the carpark.
Montville Country Cabins borders Kondalilla National Park and has walking access into the park. The official named circuits to the falls, however, begin at the Kondalilla Falls Road day-use area, 9 km from the property. Use the right trailhead for the walk you have chosen.
Picnic Creek Circuit: the shorter choice
Picnic Creek Circuit is 1.7 km return, Grade 2, with an official walking time of 45 minutes to one hour. It crosses Picnic Creek and loops through forest to a lookout.
Choose it when you want a definite walk without giving the outing half a day. It is also the better option when one person in the pair is unsure about the full descent. Grade 2 does not mean flat: access from the day-use area runs downhill and includes steps.
Allow longer if the track is wet or you stop often. The day-use area has toilets, picnic tables, shelters and barbecues, so you can pair the short circuit with lunch there.
Kondalilla Falls Circuit: stairs and a real climb back
Kondalilla Falls Circuit is 4.7 km return, Grade 3, with an official time of two to three hours. It drops down the escarpment past the rock pools and lookout to the base of the falls, then climbs back out.
You descend more than 300 stairs, then climb them on the return. Choose this circuit if both walkers are comfortable with uneven surfaces, sustained steps and the climb back to the day-use area.
Carry water, wear sturdy shoes and take insect repellent. Queensland Parks advises visitors to stay behind barriers, avoid diving or jumping into the creek and never cross a flooded track. Read the Kondalilla safety advice before setting out.
Narrows and Baroon lookouts: a different trailhead
Narrows Lookout and Baroon Lookout do not begin at the falls day-use area. Both use the Great Walk entrance on Narrows Road.
Narrows Lookout is 2.2 km return, Grade 3, and about one hour. Baroon Lookout is 4.4 km return, Grade 3, and about two hours. They suit a day where the lookout matters more than reaching the waterfall.
The full Great Walk route from Baroon Pocket Dam to the Kondalilla day-use area is 11.4 km one way. The first 2.2 km reaches Baroon Lookout; the remaining 9.2 km continues to Kondalilla. Queensland Parks lists six to eight hours across the two sections. It needs a transport plan because it is not a loop.
Weather makes the final choice
Severe wet weather can flood and close tracks. Water over a crossing is a stop sign, not part of the walk. Check Queensland park alerts and the forecast on the morning you go.
Heat matters too. An early start gives the full circuit more margin. After heavy rain, the shorter circuit may be the sensible choice even if the falls are the reason you came.
Back at the cabins, the spa bath is useful after either route. From April through September, firewood is supplied for the fireplace. Keep the rest of the day light: lunch, the balcony, perhaps the Montville Village guide if your legs still want Main Street.
Pick by stairs, weather and time. Picnic Creek is the short forest loop. The Falls Circuit is the full descent. Neither needs another walk added to prove the day counted.
